With more than a year and a half of a planning in the making, August saw 300 international VIP guests fly into Cape Town for a weekend of festivities to honour Michael Ajukwu’s 60th Birthday. A prominent businessman from Nigeria, Mr. Ajukwu wanted to showcase the best of Cape Town to his guests. This was a pure Concepts Collection collaborative effort as both our Event Concepts and Travel Concepts teams were on hand to not only manage each guest’s itinerary to South Africa, but also overseeing and designing two luxury events that would create a weekend of celebrations to remember!
The international guest list arrived throughout the week and filled the historic 5 star Mount Nelson Hotel, the trendy 15 on Orange Hotel with some overflow at the The Taj Hotel! The first event that would officially welcome guests to Cape Town would take place on the Friday evening at the magnificent Cavalli Wine and Stud Estate in Stellenbosch. Guests were transferred to the winelands where they were greeted to the beautiful sounds of Bolaji Banjoko – one of Nigeria’s top saxophonist and entertainers – more commonly known as Beejay Sax. In Cavalli’s state of the art and award winning Art Gallery, guests were treated to an incredible wine tasting experience, hosted by sommeliers from Under The Influence, and it was here that they sampled the best of South African wines.
Dinner took place in Cavalli’s exquisite banqueting hall and this pre-birthday dinner paved the ‘glamorous way’ for what was in store for the whole weekend! Expertly designed by our Event Concepts design team, larger-than-life custom shades in midnight blue and gold filled the vast space. This on-trend colour scheme continued on the dinner tables and was contrasted with contemporary floral arrangements in white and lime green. Midnight blue and gold diamond shaped menus were the final designer “layer” of custom details that tied together the look of each place setting beautifully.
During dinner, Beejay Sax warmed up the stage with his vibrant performance that got many guests out of their seats. However, the ultimate surprise that left many guests speechless was a show-stopping performance by Afro-Jazz legend, and multi-award winning musician, Jimmy Dludlu. His energetic performance had guests hanging onto every note, and by the end of the evening, on the transfers back to Cape Town; guests were left guessing as to what could possibly top this pre-birthday event the following night at the Black Tie affair!
